Event: CUE Presents Hope for the Holidays and a History of Rady Children’s Hospital

Rady Children’s Hospital History

Rady Children’s Hospital started in the 1950’s with 12 children. Working with the Board of the San Diego Society for Crippled Children, a new children’s hospital was constructed that housed these dozen patients. At the time, polio was still affecting children, and Rady’s was a tremendous help for the community.

Within 10 years, they expanded to 90 beds and had programs for child development and a speech and hearing clinic. By the1970’s, they started CHET, a transportation program for children, and purchased what is now the Helen Bernardy Center for Medically Fragile Children.

The 80’s gave way to a new surgical center, a trauma center, and the child protection center: the  Chadwick Center for Children and Families.
The Rose Pavillion and Center for Healthier Communities for Children opened up in the 1990’s, and Rady’s had over 200 beds. By 2011, there were over 440 beds available, more than double the beds from the previous decade. They had also partnered with UCSD with a child care and research program, and opened the Acute Care Pavilion, making it the largest pediatric hospital in California.

Since then, they have started the following:

  • Medical Behavioral Unit

  • 360 Sports Medicine

  • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services

  • Acute Cardiac Unit

  • Rady Pediatric Genomic and Systems Medicine Institute at Rady Children’s

  • Orthopedics program

  • Project Baby Bear

  • Their first heart transplant

They now have over 500 beds and numerous programs and pediatric care specialties and care units in multiple cities.

What They Are Doing Now

As of September 2018 Radys has been focusing on whole genome sequencing for critically-ill newborns in order to better accurately diagnose and treat them early on with “Project Baby Bear.”  Over 1000 children have benefited from this project as of November 2018.

About CUE

CUE (Create Unite Engage), at its core, was created not only as a means of bringing people together to support San Diego arts and music, but to also emphasize the importance of giving back to both local communities and the world at large. We’ve held several events all with an emphasis on giving back to organizations we find to be doing good for the world at large. CUE was formed in early 2017 and some of the organizations we have supported thus far have have been: GiveWell, Comida No Bombas, and now we are gearing up for the Radys Children’s Hospital Toy Drive.

This year we wanted to do something special in the spirit of gifting and come together as a community to help the children of Rady Children's Hospital. Many of these children sadly don't get the opportunity to have a typical Christmas. We know that with the help of our generous community, we can collectively work to add joy to the holidays for these children.

To see what Rady’s greatest needs are this year and what items they are able/unable to accept please check out the event page for more info by clicking on the event flyer below.
